Lime Carvings by Phil Ashman
I can’t remember when or why I started carving in lime, other than I’d heard from other woodworkers that it was the best. Having tried various other woods I found that Lime was a pleasure and a joy to work with. I have done so now for well over 30 years.

My first carving was actually a painting done on a piece of oak that had originally been part of an old drawer, a friend suggested carving the painting.
From there I have never looked back. I found that Lime, with its close white grain & smooth body, makes a perfect blank canvas, where I can get minute detail with great sharpness.
Working closely with nature on a daily basis, I have found inspiration from woodlands and working with Bonsai. Groups of trees & rocks have always inspired me greatly. My carvings all reflect this.
The lime boards are framed with their own natural bark, making each piece unique.
My carvings vary in size, approx
46cm x 25cm and 85cm x 45cm
